Colmore Infant and Nursery School

At Colmore Infant and Nursery School, we are proud to be a vibrant, inclusive school at the heart of our diverse Kings Heath community. Everything we do is driven by one belief: every child deserves to feel safe, valued, respected and inspired to achieve their very best. We believe children should never be defined by the challenges they have experienced but by the limitless potential they have to flourish.

This belief has shaped our journey as a trauma-informed school and inspired the development of our unique ACE Curriculum, where ACE stands for Amazing, Confident Experts rather than Adverse Childhood Experiences. By changing the narrative, we have created a strengths-based approach that places belonging, aspiration, confidence and opportunity at the centre of every child's learning journey.

Over many years, we have embedded attachment-aware and trauma-informed practice into every aspect of school life. We recognised that traditional approaches do not always meet the needs of children who have experienced adversity, trauma or significant life events. Instead, we have created a culture built on nurturing relationships, emotional safety, consistency and unconditional positive regard, ensuring that every child feels understood, supported and ready to learn.

Our commitment to this work has been recognised nationally. We are proud recipients of the Gold Rights Respecting School Award, reflecting how children's rights are woven through our ethos, curriculum and decision-making, empowering children to become active, respectful citizens who know their voices matter. We are also honoured to have received the ARC Alex Timpson Award, recognising our outstanding commitment to attachment-aware and trauma-informed practice and the positive impact this has on the lives of our children, families and wider community. These accolades are not destinations but milestones on our continuous journey to provide the very best education and care for every child.
We have invested extensively in professional learning so that every member of staff shares a deep understanding of child development, attachment, trauma and emotional wellbeing. This collective expertise influences every interaction, every classroom and every decision we make. Our curriculum, behaviour approaches and pastoral support work together to create an environment where children feel secure enough to take risks, develop resilience and thrive academically, socially and emotionally.

The impact is evident across our school community. Our children grow into Amazing, Confident Experts who believe in themselves, embrace challenges and celebrate one another's successes. They develop confidence, resilience and independence through meaningful learning experiences, strong relationships and a curriculum that values the whole child as much as academic achievement.

We know that children flourish when schools and families work in partnership. That is why we place great importance on building trusting relationships with parents and carers, ensuring that our trauma-informed philosophy extends beyond the classroom and strengthens our wider community.

As we continue our journey, we remain committed to learning, innovating and sharing our practice with others. We are passionate about supporting schools to develop attachment-aware and trauma-informed approaches that transform lives, raise aspirations and create cultures where every child belongs.

At Colmore Infant and Nursery School, by redefining ACEs as Amazing, Confident Experts, we are empowering every child to recognise their strengths, celebrate their individuality and flourish both now and in the future.
